The Impact of TikTok Content Related to Vancouver’s Indigenous People on Undergraduate Students at UBC
Type of Presentation: Oral Presentation
Abstract: I am interested in the impact of TikTok content related to Vancouver’s indigenous people on UBC because the indigenous culture and history is very important for everyone who lives here to know. And also the short videos have a huge impact for everyone nowadays. The current academic discussion focuses on the impact of social media use on the mental health of teenagers. However, it is still unclear how the video narratives about the treatment of indigenous people in Vancouver specifically affect the mental health of local students. The research question raised in this study is: To what extent does the frequency of watching TikTok videos about indigenous experiences correlate with UBC undergraduate students’ level of social anxiety reading those? The research method will be Human-subject research and quantitative research method. I will develop and distribute a digital survey and randomly ask 500 UBC undergraduate students. My hypothesis is that they will have a positive correlationship. This project doesn’t study all UBC faculty members but instead focuses on undergraduate students. Ultimately, I plan to present these proposed findings through an oral presentation.
