The relationship of humour used between medical organisations and tourism.

Type of Presentation: Oral presentation

Abstract: This project explores humour in the context of medical organisations and tourism, examining why these institutions choose specific types of humour. Previous research on medical humour suggests that it aims to reduce anxiety, negative emotions, and abnormal behaviours among patients undergoing self-examination. In tourism, humour has been identified as a tool for persuading tourists to waste less and protect the natural habitat and its sustainability. Studies in these areas often focus on the effects and results but pay less attention to the reasons and processes underlying humour choices. However, there is still a gap in understanding why institutions avoid certain types of humour and how they decide which humour to use. Furthermore, existing research does not fully explain whether there are common humour approaches or strategies in both the medical and tourism disciplines. Therefore, my research question is: What is the relationship between the types of humour used in medical and tourism contexts, and what factors influence the selection of these types of humour? This study will focus on discourse analysis, more specifically, on visual and textual analysis. on in posters. The data will be collected through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and VistOslo. I expect the findings to show that there are common ways and some differences in using humour. A limitation of this research is the representation; CDC and VistOslo cannot fully represent the whole medical field and tourism industry, in terms of discovering humour pattern.
