Put Title : Social Media and Mental Health: Exploring the impact of social media experiences on mental health among first-year students at the UBC campus.
Type of Presentation: Poster
Abstract: This research proposal is based on my interest observing well-being state of students. There is a strong relationship between the increased number of screen time and its impact on adolescents’ mental well-being in recent years. Studies in this area have found that the increasing use of social media may lead to depression, anxiety, or poor sleep habits. But less attention was given to explore what motivates young adults to continuously use social media if extreme social media content use is highly associated with mental health challenges. There is a still gap in understanding what drives students to consume more online content. This leads to my research question: what motivates university students to continue using social media despite its huge effects on their daily habits? Data will be collected through semi-structured interviews from a group of 20 participants at the UBC campus. A limitation of the study is the small number of participants. This research proposal will be demonstrated in poster format, and may give a space for providing effective guidance for mitigating mental health challenges related to social media use.
