The expression and Cognition of Traditional Culture by the Teenage Group on Western Social Media
Type of Presentation: Oral
Abstract:
My interest in this topic comes from seeing more Chinese teenagers share traditional culture on Western social media, however Chinese and Western audiences understand these contents differently. There is some previous research that shows short videos help young creators share culture and break language barriers, but most studies only focus on Chinese platforms like Douyin, leaving a gap in how creators express culture and how audiences react on Tiktok and Instagram. This study will focus on how teenage creators will express Chinese traditional culture on TikTok and Instagram, and what core characteristics define the cultural cognitive bias of Chinese and foreign audiences to these expressions. I will analyze 5 original public videos from October 2925 to March 2026, each of the videos having more than 50 comments, using qualitative discourse analysis to study content and comments. I expect to identify common expressions and understanding differences, aiming to help teenagers communicate better across cultures. The limitation is only having 5 videos, which cannot represent all cases.
