Coastal Erosion Rates in Different Areas of Vancouver
Abstract
This project examined coastal erosion rates at three Vancouver beaches—English Bay, Spanish Banks, and Kitsilano Beach—from 2000 to 2020, using satellite imagery analysis. Our objective was to determine if erosion rates differed across these locations and to identify potential reasons for observed differences. Results indicated significant shoreline retreat at English Bay, minimal change at Spanish Banks, and slight advancement at Kitsilano Beach. These findings suggest that high wave energy and urban development contribute to increased erosion at English Bay, while natural conditions preserve Spanish Banks, and human interventions, such as beach nourishment, have helped Kitsilano Beach advance.
