The Impact of Wind Energy Advancements on Canadian Renewable Energy Policies

Abstract

This project explores how advancements in wind energy technologies have influenced Canadian renewable energy policies from 2009 to 2024. By analyzing key technological milestones and corresponding policy documents, we assess the timing mismatch between innovation and regulation. Through case studies of Ontario’s FIT program and Alberta’s REP and hybrid energy systems, we find that policy often lags behind technology, especially at the federal level. Our findings highlight the need for more proactive and adaptive policy frameworks to support innovation and accelerate renewable energy integration.
