Analyzing the Characteristics of Sedimentary Rocks: A Case Study on Geologic History of Stanley Park

Abstract

The study focuses on the geologic evolution of Stanley Park through the analysis of sedimentary rock samples collected from its western coastline. A total of 25 rock specimens from five distinct sampling sites were collected. Key physical characteristics, including size, color, morphology, hardness, and magnetic response, were determined, revealing the complex geological past shaped by deep marine sedimentation, deltaic deposition, volcanic intrusion, and glacial transport. The data supported a timeline of events from the Late Cretaceous to the Pleistocene, reflecting the influences of the Nanaimo Group, Coast Plutonic Complex, and Fraser Glaciation. Although limited by sample depth and resolution, the observations were interpreted through comparisons with established geological studies, allowing for inferences about the relative and approximate ages of the formations. Despite the limited size of the database, the study shows that macroscopic sedimentary analysis can still play a valuable role in reconstructing regional geologic history.
