The Relationship between Rotten Tomatoes Ratings of Movies and Their Weekend-to-weekend Box Office Drops

Abstract

This project aims to investigate the regression relationship between Rotten Tomatoes ratings and the weekly box office drops of movies based on 200 movie samples from the Top 1,000 Lifetime Grosses Movies. Audience and critic ratings were set as independent variables while the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th box office drops were set as dependent variables. The regression modeling and data visualization tool used for the data analysis was R. Data of movies’ domestic box office opening, distributor, and genre were also collected to find out their potential influence on the research question. The findings will provide insights into consumer behavior and the influence of digital platforms on the film industry, filling the gap in the long-term impact of movie ratings on box office performance.
