The Investigation on the CO2 Absorption of Douglas fir in the Pacific Spirit Regional Park Forest PerYearAbstract

Abstract

This investigation focus on measuring the average CO2 absorption amount of Douglas fir in Pacific Spirit Regional Park(hereinafter referred to as the Pacific Park) in Vancouver. It is committed to finding the factors that affecting the CO2 absorption and summarize certain ways that can increase the amount of co2 absorbed by forests. This project find human movement (construction, traffic emission etc.) may cause negative influence on tree growth rate and this usually lead to reduction in tree CO2 absorption. This research also conclude that the growth status of Douglas fir in Pacific Park is better than average in certain degree, indicate that the Pacific Park is a suitable ecological environment for Douglas fir. Emphasizing the importance of frost protection in carbon balance is also the focus of the study.

Chanel(Yiran) Cai (She/Her/Hers)Chanel

is a vantage science student at the University of British Columbia who plans to study psychology in her upper year. She is also interested inenvironmental protection and artificial intelligence development; her goal is to combine artificial intelligence and psychological therapy to create a societywhere everyone can access psychological counseling easily. She also enjoys painting and swimming in her spare time.

Yamama Mhd Khir Al Sbiei (She/Her/Hers)

Yamama is currently a first year science student in the university of British Columbia, Canada. She is interested in science in general and biology in particular. She wants to major in biology in her second year of university in order to deepen knowledge in this field. She is also interested in the environment and the impact of human actions on it, so she is currently doing a project on the carbon content in the atmosphere in a Pacific Spirit Regional Park Forest to see the difference between the carbon content in the deep forest and edge(where it is close to human practices). She is also ambitious to develop her English language, which her presence in Vantage College helped her to develop.
