Optimizing Wind Turbines: A Study on the Effects of Turbine Blade Angles

Abstract

As a renewable energy, wind energy is an environmentally friendly and sustainable energy source. In addition, it is also a significant composition of global energy transition. If a country can utilize wind energy efficiently, it will ensure the stability of the country's energy security. Wind power is a technology that converts the wind energy into electrical energy. Wind turbines can implement this technology perfectly, which consist of blades, shafts, generators, etc. Factors such as the length, shape and mass of the blades affect the rotational efficiency. This project explores how the wind turbine blade angle affects the efficiency of power generation. In this experiment, the power output of the wind turbine with blade angles of 10°, 20°, 30°, 40° and 50° was tested. Finally it was determined that the maximum power output of the wind turbine was found at the blade angle of 30°.

Biographies

Yutong Gong is a first-year student in the Faculty of Science at the University of British Columbia. Her main interest is in physics, especially aerodynamics. She aspires to make significant contributions to the aerospace field in the future.


(Vinnie) Qingyuan Liu is a student who is finishing her freshman year in University of British Columbia. She is very interested in the field of mathematics and hopes to enter the Mathematical Sciences program in her sophomore year to enhance her professional skills. She hopes to pursue a career in the mathematical field in the future.


(Nicole) Wenming Liu is a first-year student at the University of British Columbia with a keen interest in the application of chemistry to the manufacture of cosmetics. She plans to continue her studies in the chemistry department in the future.
