Investigation of Risks of Landslides and Efficacy of its Preventative Mechanism

Abstract

This research investigates the risks of landslides by concatenating a two-stage experiment with a simple piping structure prototype. This experiment involves a rainfall simulation by a spray bottle that spills water on a soil slope, which helped to understand the behavior of landslides and to quantify the efficacy of such preventative mechanism by building a drainage system. The results were collected onto a spreadsheet and compiled into scatter plot charts. The results have shown that the amount of stormwater and the rate of the rainfall will have an impact on the length of the duration of landslides, yet it does not show signs of changing the mechanical behaviors of landslides. The experiment also suggests that the physical structures and material choice of a drainage system are important criteria to ensure the structural integrity of the system in order to effectively reduce the risks of landslides.
