Research Project Title

Enhancing Campus Security: Optimizing Emergency Light Placement

Abstract

This research project aims to optimize the placement of additional emergency lights on the UBC Vancouver campus to enhance campus security. The existing emergency blue phones, equipped with cameras and connected to Campus Security, serve as crucial resources for reporting crimes and seeking assistance. To ensure their high accessibility, the research question focuses on identifying optimal locations for additional emergency lights based on the campus’s current emergency lights system. The data collection process involves obtaining the blue phone map from the UBC Campus Security website and converting it into a plane grid diagram. The connectivity between each blue phone will be analyzed quantitatively using the beta index, assessing their visibility and proximity to one another. By assigning weights to the connected edges based on distance, the research aims to identify locations for additional emergency lights that maximize connectivity and improve overall security. The findings will provide suggestions for placing one initial emergency light and exploring additional suitable locations for multiple emergency lights.
