The Exploration of the Feasibility of a Sample Refraction Instrument: Design and Evaluation

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the feasibility of building a simple refractive index measuring instrument to measure the refractive index of various media. This research involves designing and evaluating a cost-effective and easy-to-use device that can measure the refractive index of a liquid. In the experiment, using a laser flashlight as a light source, the substance under test was placed in a transparent rectangular container marked with a scale. By systematically changing the incidence angle and measuring the corresponding refraction angle, the refractive index of different media such as water, alcohol and oil can be determined. The data obtained was analyzed and compared with the known refractive index to verify the accuracy of the instrument. The results of this study will provide valuable insight into the possibility of creating a simple, low-cost refraction instrument that can be used for educational purposes and has the potential to obtain refractive index data of substances in non-laboratory settings.
