Abstract

Edible acidic liquids are widely enjoyed due to their unique and exciting flavor. However, the potential effects of these acidic liquids on the human body remain largely unknown. Therefore, a study was conducted in 2023 to investigate the impact of edible acidic liquids on calcium carbonate present in eggshells. This study employed a controlled experimental design and included seven experimental groups consisting of four carbonated liquids, two types of fruit Juices, and white vinegar, along with a control group using water. The experiment involved immersing eggshells in various acidic liquids for a specific duration while monitoring any changes in the structural integrity of the eggshells. The key findings revealed that higher levels of acidity in the edible liquids led to significant erosion and weakening of the eggshells, implying a correlation between acid concentration and the degradation of calcium carbonate within the eggshells.

Biographies

Xinruo Liang is a first-year Vantage Science student at UBC. She lives in the land of Musqueam and is interested in working towards the goal of improving her self-learning skills as well as her knowledge base.

Allen was actually born in a northern ethnic minority region of China. During high school, he had the opportunity to travel to remote areas in Northeast China and teach children who didn't have access to formal education. And now, he is a UBC vantage science student with dreams of studying cognitive systems after his first year is done.

Mengqi Ruan is a science student with a great passion for anatomy and anthropology. She is a kpop lover and have a strong fondness for badminton and engaging in various sports activities. After an intense game of badminton, Mengqi find pleasure in quenching her thirst with a refreshing soft drink.
