Effect of temperature on the germination rate of soybean seeds

Abstract

Soybean (Glycine max) is a globally important crop, and understanding the factors that influence seed germination is critical to optimizing soybean yield and productivity.

This study investigated the effect of temperature on the germination rate of soybean seeds with the aim of determining the optimal temperature conditions for successful soybean crop production. While previous studies have examined germination rates of other seed types, there are still knowledge gaps regarding the specific temperature requirements for soybean seeds. By conducting this study, more accurate guidelines for soybean planting temperatures can be developed. It is assumed that the germination rate of soybean seed increases linearly as the temperature approaches the optimal range, but decreases linearly beyond that range. The experiment will be conducted in a controlled environment using a growth chamber. Sterilized soybean seeds will be placed in petri dishes with filter paper and randomly placed in the growth chamber where they will be exposed to temperatures ranging from 6°C to 30°C. The experiment will be repeated three times and germination will be measured at 24-hour intervals over three days.
