Making the Most Appropriate pH in Irrigation Water for Herbaceous Peony
Abstract
Research conducted on making tap water the most suitable state for herbaceous peonies enabled individuals to grow more successful and produce higher quality peonies. The pH of water was identified as one of the key factors affecting the growth and development of herbaceous peonies. The aim of this study was to turn the alkaline tap water (pH 8.3-8.5) in Vancouver into neutral water, which would best suit the growth of herbaceous peonies. Five equal amounts (5 g) of different substances (lemon juice, pineapple juice, white vinegar, rice water, and liquid from decaying flower stems) were separately added to 100 ml of tap water. The purpose was to compare which substance brought the pH value of tap water closer to 7, in order to determine the most appropriate substance for irrigating herbaceous peonies. The results illustrated that under the same conditions, the liquid from decaying flower stems was the most effective among these substances in achieving the desired pH level.
