Modelling Social Media Trends of Extreme Weather: Reddit Case Study on Atlantic Hurricanes in the United States

Abstract

Mathematical models have been commonly used to analyze trends in data. These models can be used to understand the rapid dissemination of news and information, particularly in weather-related events that significantly affect communities, such as hurricanes. This study aimed to develop a sufficient mathematical model to describe the overall trends of social media activity during category four and five hurricane events that take place on the East Coast of the United States. The model used is a sigmoid logistic function with two constants based on a linear function. The model is optimized using the gradient descent method that is run on a computer program. This study presents a model that can analyze social media trends and correlate the model with real-life factors, such as location and severity. The result shows that the developed model indicate the speed of social media activities during hurricanes which probably caused by peak hurricane season, duration, and news over saturation at that time. In addition, it shows that the midpoint position correlate with the rise in social media activities.
