Project proposal summary

Summary: Our group research is about the relationship between income inequality and education inequality. Our research question is that What is the relationship between extracurricular tutoring and income inequality in China before and after the double reduction policy? Extracurricular tutoring means some academic tutoring after school. [1]Government public Double reduction policy to reduce students’ after-school workload, restrict the appearance of extracurricular tutoring companies and limit the time of students attend in extracurricular tutoring. China's education system makes children compete for educational resources. In the past few years, after-school tutoring agencies have sprung up in China. In order for their children to be successful in the Chinese education system, parents enroll in various extracurricular classes, such as math, physics, chemistry, etc.[2] However, families with low income cannot afford the high tuition fees, which leads to the problem of inequality in Education resources in China. In China, the government pubic a double reduction policy to reduce children’s stress on after school study work. In our research, we will use quantitative method and survey to find the relationship family income and the number of attending in extracurricular tutoring. Our study adds knowledge to the current state of education and illustrates how this policy affects education resource inequality in China and education's Sustainable Development Goals

Project Objectives and Contribution to Scholarship: The gap in the literature is that the impact of double reduction policy. It limits students' attendance at extra-curricular tuitions and reduces the amount of work assigned by schools. But for the rich, they have more material resources, such as home tutors and a better environment. So, our research will answer the question that: Will the new policy increase inequality or balance resources? The study of the relationship between the two is important due to the fact that more and more parents in China believe that extracurricular activities are indispensable, which leads to the involution among students. Some students themselves will rely on extra-curricular tuition rather than focusing on the school itself, which is vicious competition. Many students receive a great deal of stress both physically and emotionally as a result. However, the futures of these students are not guaranteed just from doing well in school. Given that current schools do not educate students important life skills, it is difficult to claim that their education will help them in the future. This research project will show whether extra-curricular tuition really has such an important role to play in bridging the resource inequality caused by the gap between the rich and the poor. it will fill the research gap by collecting changes in the quality of education received by students from different walks of life before and after the policy by survey. We are then able to demonstrate gap by comparison.

Connection of Research Proposal to Sustainability: Equality in education is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and is socially sustainable. China's education system makes children compete for educational resources. The relationship between economic and social development and educational development is closely linked. China's current education system makes students compete for educational resources, which is not a harmonious mechanism for sustainable development and vitality. Our project study the current state of China education and illustrates will this policy affects and change the unhealthy education inequality and reach the education's Sustainable Development Goals.
