What is your research question?

How has gender inequality under the threat of terrorists put Pakistan in a difficult position in education?

Research proposal keywords or concepts

Talibans, Gender Inequality and government.

How would you summarize your proposed research idea?

Given reports that education in Pakistan has the poorest performance globally, investigating the causes of Pakistan’s poor performance is crucial for improving the country’s development of education (Oslo Summit on Education and Development, 2015). Education for women has been central to discourses that have sought to modernize developing Muslim societies. Therefore, our proposed research study investigates the relevance of education to gender inequality and terrorist attacks in Pakistan.

Where is the literature gap and how does your proposed research attempt to fill that gap?

Women’s education has been highly related to gender inequality (Khurshid, 2014). The Taliban is an anti-social organization that usually attacks girls' schools and prevents girls from attending these schools (King & Winthrop, 2015). Yet, there is a gap in the existing literature regarding how education, terrorist attacks and gender inequality affect each other; therefore, our research study investigates this gap.

Why is this gap worthy of research?

There exists an assumption that terrorists are responsible for low levels of education in Pakistan. Therefore, our study investigates the connections between terrorist groups and poor education standards in Pakistan to generate deep insights that can inform further research.

What future change could this research possibly contribute to, related to sustainability?

The data from this research study can contribute to government policy-making relative to education, as well as strengthen calls to end gender inequality, leading to the possibility of equal education for boys and girls.

What made your group interested in and/or what excites you about your proposed topic?

Our interest in this area developed after I was watching Nobel Peace Prize recipient Malala Yousafzai’s famous speech. When I learned that many girls are forced to work outside of the home, or get married at an early age, it occurred to me that it would be interesting to know how I could contribute to improving this issue.
