An Exploration in Links of Black Friday and the Belief of Climate Change

Biographies

Jay Chang

Jay Chang

Jay is a UBC Vantage student who is from Taiwan. She speaks Mandarin and English. She is interested in this topic because she is an environment-caring Black Friday shopper. She especially enjoys the gigantic price drop of cosmetics on Black Friday. The brands that are featured in ‘environmentally-friendly’ are the top of her list. She also likes to shop in outlets as there are always some hidden treasures at low prices. Jay thinks that products are meant to be used, if no one else would do so, she doesn’t mind being the one so there are fewer wastes in producing.

Jennifer Lin

Jennifer Lin

Jennifer is a UBC vantage student who is from Taiwan. She speaks Mandarin and English. She is interested in this topic because she pays attention to events relevant to climate change and environmental issues. In which, she wants to know how other people think. When she first come to Vancouver, Black Friday is the first holiday she participated in. She thinks this is interesting because the place she has lived in didn’t have this kind of holiday. She is curious and would like to know more about how things will become intriguing if she links the two concepts together.

Selena Li

Selena Li

Selena is from China and she is a UBC Vantage student. She is outgoing and positive. She speaks two languages which are Chinese and English. She has a unique taste in fashion, and one of her favourite places to visit is the shopping mall. Of course, she is never absent on Black Fridays. She is interested in the quality of clothes and Black Friday purchasing, therefore, she also wants to study these associations and impacts on sustainability.

Matt Chang

Matt Chang

Matt is from Taiwan who currently enrolled in the UBC Vantage Arts One program. His intention of initiating this project was due to the fact that he did tons of things that are non-eco-friendly, such as not buying a Tesla, and keeps buying H&M. He was shocked by the statistics provided by a famous Netflix show called “Patriot Act” that the truth behind fast fashion is the ridiculous amount of resources we waste on this particular industry.

Introduction to our project

Our project explores the relationship between Black Friday and climate change belief. By using the experiences and thoughts from students, we can find out what is the link between these two topics. The image below is the poster that our group design for the research project, take a look if you feel interested in Black Friday and climate change!
