Hello! My name is Karin, from Tokyo, Japan. As you see the photo, I am a big Starbucks lover! I often spend my weekend at the cafe to enjoy good foods and drinks. In our group’s research topic is sustainable agriculture. We chose this topic because we all like to eat food! Through the research, we gained knowledge of the importance of sustainable agriculture and measured how much knowledge does the Vantage people have. I hope you will learn new things about sustainable agriculture from our presentation!

Hello, I’m Mark (Xinlong Yu) from Vantage Arts. I like Hip-hop music, sometimes I will produce some tracks in the home studio. I am a big foodie, and always want to try some delicious food from another culture. Our group choose the topic of sustainable agriculture because it’s related to food. We learn the importance of sustainable agriculture in our daily life and want to know how the knowledge will influence Vantage student’s understanding of sustainable agriculture and consumption. Hello, I’m Tia from China. The picture is of me at a picnic. I really enjoy climbing and camping with my friends in my spare time. I have a lot of fun being outdoors and it's interesting to share my food with my friends when I go camping. I like to try food with different regional characteristics, and so do my group members. This is the reason why we chose this topic. Through this research, we would like to know how well Vantage students understand sustainable agriculture and how it reflects in their lives. I hope you will pay more attention to sustainable agriculture after listening to our presentation.

Objective

Today, “sustainability” become an important key to solve the problem of the environment. The purpose of our study is to try to find people’s understanding, attitude and behaviour toward sustainable agriculture. Eating habits have a big impact on sustainable agriculture, such as meat consumption and water use. Different groups of people have different levels of knowledge about sustainable agriculture. Through the research, we investigated the consumption and living habits of different educational backgrounds and discuss whether the reasons for such differences are related to different school education. Only by knowing the reasons behind it can we fundamentally improve the problem.

Method

Our group conducted an interview for seven participants who are Vantage students. We asked eight questions related to understanding and behaviour toward sustainable agriculture. In order to analyze interviews, we used a qualitative research method and thematic analysis and analyzed the understanding toward sustainable agriculture and how the understanding impact on practicing sustainable agriculture.

Result

Throughout our research, most people heard the word “sustainable agriculture” in the various subject areas and most of the Vantage students showed a good understanding of sustainable agriculture. Participants who showed a good understanding likely to get an education before. As well, every participant thought sustainable agriculture is an important phenomenon in order to improve environmental problems.

Conclusion

Overall, participants show different levels of understanding of sustainable agriculture. Most of the participants with relevant knowledge background understand the importance of sustainability and take actions to support sustainable agriculture in their lives. People who understand sustainable agriculture is more likely to consume sustainable agricultural products. As well, they practice sustainable agriculture in multiple ways, such as caring water usage. School education plays an important role in people's understanding of sustainable agriculture and daily living habits.
