Abstract

As one of the fastest-growing industries globally, tourism has had significant and long-lasting negative impacts on the environment, especially regarding energy usage. Some of the harms caused to the environment by tourism-related fossil fuel usage are increased levels of gas emissions, pollution, destruction of natural resources, and depletion of wildlife. However, sustainable tourism can minimize the negative impacts by limiting non-renewable resources.

Our research contains thematic analysis aiming to increase awareness of the negative impacts of tourism on the environment and encourage people to apply sustainable tourism practices. We interviewed 6 participants who met all the criteria: being a Vantage College student and over 18 years old. Before taking part in the study, they were provided with an informed consent form and how impacting their contribution is.

As a result, participants are mostly trying to use sustainable transportation, such as bicycles, public transportation, and walking. They refuse to use transportation that requires vast amounts of fossil fuel, such as planes and ships, except overseas travel. Moreover, they mentioned recycling their garbage and using disposable shopping bags.

Consequently, participants shared their practices and became aware of how they impact the environment if they prefer convenience to sustainability. All of them mentioned that they're going to be more careful about the environmental issues. Shared practices of the participants and the information we gave them will benefit future tourists if they choose to apply them. If we work together, we can prevent the environmental destruction caused by unsustainable touristic activities and careless tourists.
