ABSTRACT

Sustainability is becoming one of the most popular topics these years because of the serious environmental pollution and resource exhaustion problems. Therefore, sustainability in tourism has been studied extensively by several disciplines such as ecology, geography, and urban management, it shows great attribution to the improvement of world tourism and local residential life quality. The central issue in sustainable tourism is the validity of changing the quality of local residential life, many researchers (Mathew,2016; Larson, 2015; Angeloni, 2013) have turned their attention to the relationship between local happiness and sustainable tourism. A long-standing problem in sustainable tourism is that what kind of positive influence in tourism could improve the local life quality, and how others (non-local residents) perceive sustainability in tourism? In our study, we want to understand how and why sustainability in tourism contributes to human life quality (Mathew,2016) and happiness index (Larson, 2015; Angeloni, 2013) improvement. We assume that by understanding how sustainable tourism can improve the quality of life of residents, the development of tourism will benefit more people, bring economic advantages, and improve people's well-being (Mathew,2016; Larson, 2015; Angeloni, 2013).

AIM

The purpose of this quantitative survey is to further understand how VANT 149 students think of the sustainable development of tourism in Canada will affect their quality of life. We are going to measure it mainly based on three aspects (economy, employment opportunities, and environment). You are invited because you are a vant149 student with experience living in Canada.

PROCEDURE

Participants will first read the information form and the consent form. After agreeing to participate in the survey, participants can withdraw at any time before June 27th. Participants will answer 11 survey questions, which will take approximately 10 minutes. After doing the survey, participants will receive the debrief form provided by the researcher to explain the purpose of the study, and finally, the participants can receive a report of the research results if they want.

DATA ANALYSIS

This pie chart is based on the penultimate question of our questionnaire. The conclusion of this question is a good response to our research question (how do vant149 students think that the sustainable development of tourism in Canada will affect their quality of life?). Most of them think sustainable tourism benefit their life, which can be shown in the above blue part. Combined with the answers to other questions, we can find that most of the vant149 students think that sustainable tourism has brought a certain impact on their life and economy and has brought more shops. Overall, they think these effects are positive. The second largest of this pie chart is the gray part (I did not pay attention), it can also be seen that some people do not pay much attention to sustainability. Combined with question 8 (mean: 4.89), we can see that vant149 students' understanding and attention to sustainable tourism are below the average.

CONCLUSION

It can be seen from this project that students of VANT149 basically have a certain degree of understanding of sustainable tourism. We believe that sustainable tourism is basically understood by the public, but the lack of promotion and publicity leads to fewer practical applications and people do not understand the specific benefits that sustainable development can bring (or the benefits do not benefit everyone) are the specific problems to be solved in sustainable tourism development.

welcome to our final presentation!
