WELCOME TO HOGWARTS!

We are a fantastic research group in Hogwarts. There are four members in our group: Dobby, Luna Lovegood, Hermione Granger and Sorting Hat. It is our pleasure to introduce ourselves to you! Let’s begin!

Group member 1: Xu Yan(Cecilia)

Ruci Sun

Hi, this is Dobby of Hogwarts, you can call me Cecilia. I am kind, brave, upright, and lovely. What makes me happy is being the most like-minded partner of our team members-Kitty, Vivian, Rucy. We are committed to the research and investigation of meat consumption and environmental sustainability. They have given me the most trust, respect and care, allowing me to share my ideas and abilities. As Dobby, I believe we can complete our research and achieve our research goals!

Group member 2: Ruci Sun(Rucy)

Hi, this is Luna Lovegood from Hogwarts, you can call me Rucy. I am a person who can face troubles in my academic life bravely, fearless of difficulties, and always willing to learn more knowledge. In this study of meat consumption and sustainability, I can help our group to summary new information and find useful information for group members. I value the experience with our group members and I hope this research will be enjoyable and successful.

Group member 3: Yifan Wang(Vivian)

Yifan Wang

Hi! This is Hermione Granger from Hogwarts. Also, you could call me Vivian. As an intelligent and innovative girl, I always comes up with plenty of fresh ideas during the research. I think that learning is one of the most crucial things in my life. Hence, when I learn about how to alter our interview questions or how to do the ICD (Information Consent Debrief Form), I almost immerse myself in the project. Furthermore, pursuit of perfection is my crucial attempt when exploring the balance between meat consumption and environmental sustainability. Finally, I grip with anticipation to our project and I believe we will try our best to hand in a perfect report.

Group member 4: Tingyuan Zhang(Kitty)

Tingyuan Zhang

Hi, this is Sorting Hats from Hogwarts. Kitty is the another name for me! I am a smart and decisive person in our research group. Therefore, the role I play in the study of meat consumption and the environment is discovering everyone’s specialty and assigning suitable works for them. All of our group mates are working really hard for this study, so I believe we are going to make a great contribution to the balance between meat consumption and environmental sustainability.

The Balance between Environmental Sustainability and Meat Consumption

High frequency of meat consumption, especially among college students (Cripps & Thiagarajah, 2018), contributes to the degradation of environment currently (Fresan & Sabaté, 2019). Based on previous literature, our research concentrates on: how do post-secondary students balance the desire to consume meat with their awareness of and concerns about sustainability. The study aimed for (1) deeper understanding of relationship between meat consumption and environmental sustainability, (2) the exploration of the balance between them, (3) interventions into the sustainability of meat consumption. In this research, qualitative methodology as the approach was utilized by means of interviews with eight participants from VANT149. Interviews were chosen to explore the ways of how the participants interpret events and how this understanding shapes their behavior in turn (Maxwell,2013). Like previous research, our study discovered that nearly all participants have a high frequency of meat consumption, and after realizing their meat consumption negatively impacts the environment, the participants were willing to change their behavior. In addition, we explored two approaches for post-secondary students to find the balance point between meat consumption and environmental sustainability: one is self-discipline for a strict control of meat consumption; the other is to support colleges in plant-based meals provisions and meat consumption decreases. Through interpretation and exploration of the balance point, our research might be conducive to the popularization of meat consumption and environmental sustainability. We predict that future research could concentrate on examining the tendency for students’ meat consumption to actually change after gaining new awareness of sustainability.
