Sustainability Beliefs Shape Environmental Behaviours

The poster shows our primary research result that sustainability beliefs would impact international students’ garbage sorting behaviours to a great extent, which is also indicated by the graph of their correlations. Please feel free to check the poster out.

Garbage sustainability beliefs and the importance of garbage sorting has been popularized in most of the countries around the world today. In order to response to this global-wise problem, we decided to study the problem of "How Do Sustainability Beliefs Shape International Students' Garbage Sorting Habits?"

Background Information

People started to become aware of the harm of domestic reuse and waste due to the global warming issue. Canadian universities have always put a significant amount of attention on building students sorting habits (Koestner, Houlfort, Paquet, Knight, 2001).

What Is This Study About?

This study aims to explore how sustainability beliefs would affect international students’ garbage sorting habits. As UBC has been to promote the importance of garbage sorting to the staff and students (University of British Columbia, 2019), and our study could suggest possible adjustmentsto existing plans. In addition, it will provide potential ways UBC can possibly do to improve their students’ on garbage classification.

Methodologies

The research will be done through the form of online survey, a questionnaire will be sent to the volunteer who are willing to attend this study, and they will be told to submit their survey after they complete it. Furthermore, as our goal of this research is to explore how does the sustainable belief influences those international students. Our survey will be including several questions that related to the impaction of garbage sorting and students’ opinion about the garbage sorting. All of these questions will be done through the choice question or matching question.

Implications

Exploring the connection could help guide education institutions to adjust related teaching and community-building content. It can popularize sustainable lifestyle and reduce garbage waste. Previous researches have shown that cultural backgrounds could impact sustainability behaviours (Nathaniel, 2006). Based on that, our research result can specifically provide a clearer and closer image of why international students have different sorting habits, and how they recycle their garbage in their daily life.

Take Away Messages

Audiences should be able to have a better understanding on the relationship between international students’sustainability beliefs and garbage sorting habits. At the same time, they will be able to prove the theory of “the stronger sustainability beliefs that an international has,the better garbage sorting habit he/she/they will have.”After this research, students will recognize this field has not been fully developed and UBC could take action to improve the situation.
