Importance of the Findings

Gender Diagnosticity

Through the process of factor analysis with regards to gender diagnosticity, we were able to narrow down this questionnaire that previously contained 115 items to a group of 25 items. These items are important because they clearly had a moderate effect in this study (medium strength correlation with gender diagnosticity). These results offer both broad and specific looks at the diagnostic items which can be further studied and researched within in this area. There is a correlation between individual preferences or behavior and self reported gender. The diagnosis uses the Big Five personality traits and diagnocity questionnaires to find out individual’s gender inclinations. The diagnosis determines whether a person is male or female based on diagnostic indicators that are gender-related. It also offers specific or broad items that can be subjected to further research within the same discipline (Lippa, 2005).

Choice of Careers

The findings give us an idea of career success by measuring people’s preferences for different positions. Due to personality playing a pivotal role in determining what career someone is likely to pursue, determining how likely the individual will be in attaining a specific career can be predicted through completing the appropriate measurement.

By looking at someone’s preference(s) for jobs in a particular position, we can classify the people into 3 categories which are risk-averse, risk-loving, and risk-neutral. For example, someone who is interested in finance or stock markets is likely to be risk-loving. This type of individual may prefer sensation-seeking activities compared to the activities that involve minimal risks. In addition, someone who has interests in accounting is usually conservative, therefore known as risk-averse or risk-neutral. This type of individual may prefer minimal risk activities.

The findings are a reflection of collaborative work which is essential in today’s work settings. Also, these findings suggest the effectiveness of virtual cooperation, which means how effective we are when collaborating through computers without face-to-face contact, or even with the absence of virtual communication.

The findings shade light on career success through the ideas of people’s inclination to different tasks. Personality plays a vital role in determining the career path a person is likely to take. People are mainly classified into three categories; those who are risk-averse, risk-neutral and the risk loving. For example, people who are likely to pursue accounting are conservative, risk-neutral or risk averse. Those interested in areas such as stock markets or finance are mainly risk lovers. They prefer jobs that are high in risks. The studies also focused on the effectiveness of virtual cooperation via computers or in circumstances where virtual communication lacks. Personality types can help show the nature of people who can work in particular circumstances and not others (Lippa, 2005).

The studies also focused on individual’s abilities to overcome challenges. People’s personalities influence people’s abilities to solve to solve problems therefore directly influencing the quality of lives they lead. A person’s problem solving skills reflect on their personalities thus playing a significant role in determining how they deal with challenges in their lives (Young & Sweeting, 2004).

Ways of Coping with Challenges

The findings have a significant number of variables that influence the manner in which an individual handles challenges in order to be successful. One's personality may influence how they solve problems in order to lead a more satisfactory life where the skills they possess help also influence the quality of life they lead. On the contrary, poor skills in problem-solving may lead to difficulties in overcoming adaptive challenges in life. The questionnaire includes items asking how an individual deals with problems in everyday life. An individual’s problem-solving skills are a reflection of the individual’s personality and therefore play a critical role in determining how he or she will deal with life challenges.

Consumer Choices

Through the findings of the participant’s propensity for career choices and activities, there is a strong indication that the responses were completed through heuristics based on the option’s associated gender. For example, majority of the females viewed knitting more favorable than males even when majority of the males had not attempted knitting. The decision was made on gender stereotype as knitting is viewed as a feminine activity. By associating a certain gender to a product can influence consumer behaviour.

Procter & Gamble (P&G) launched the Old Spice marketing campaign with a purpose of conveying a gender receptive message. Specifically, P&G launched the campaign with the intent of establishing a more masculine image. Through this new image, Old Spice successfully stimulated consumers’ interests in the product when purchasing male grooming products. This campaign was highly effective, rendering Old Spice as the top male grooming company. Thus, Procter & Gamble was able to influence consumers’ decision-making process.

Work-Family Role

Men and women have different roles and they are important on their own unique ways. Based on the results, women are more family oriented than man, which was determined by the amount of time spent doing kitchen work such as baking and tending family members. Men, on the other hand, were more inconclusive in the family-work role. Based on the results, we can only conclude that women are more family oriented than men but in terms of work role is inconclusive because no questions were asked about the importance of family and work. Such conclusion partially supports studies done by Cinamon and Rich in 2002, where they categorized both men and women into three groups: family profile(high family role and low work role), work profile (high work role and low family role) and dual profile (high in both family and work role). The results show that women outperform men in family profile; however, they are underrepresented than men in the work profile. When it comes to dual role, there were no differences between men and women.
