Course Description

Pharmacy 535 is a 3-part course series comprised of the PharmD Seminar (PHAR 535A) for first and second year students, Academic Half Day (PHAR 535B) for second year students and the Oral Comprehensive Exams (PHAR 535C) for second year students.

The Pharm D seminar (PHAR 535A) is a course designed to provide students with opportunities to develop and present 20 minute seminars focused on current therapeutic and research material that address issues pertinent to clinical pharmacy practice. The question period that follows each seminar provides an opportunity for students to interact with the audience of faculty and peers.

Time

Seminar will be held from 12:15-1:15 - please show up on time.

Attendance at seminar is mandatory for 2nd year students (only exception is for those 2nd year students who are on rotation sites outside of the Lower Mainland).
Presentations WILL be cut off if they exceed 20 min.
As a participant, please be attentive to the speaker, ask questions and engage in the discussion.

Number of Seminars

During the 2 years of the Program, each student must successfully present 4 seminars (one per term), one from each of the following categories, in any order:

Critical comparison of a new drug (last 2 years or so) compared to standard therapy
Critical evaluation of an old drug - can be for a new or old condition
A controversial area around a disease state/drug class/policy etc
Issue relevant to monitoring of drug therapy

Format

Oral presentation, typically with the following format

a clinical question in the form of a PICO question followed by
a review and critique of the best available evidence and then
conclusions/recommendations based on the evidence

Students are also encouraged to try different approaches both in terms of organization of content as well as in the use of delivery tools / methods to make the session educationally effective and to present in a way that best engages the audience.

As this is a "formal" presentation please dress appropriately when you are presenting (basically no jeans)

Topics

Students are expected to present topics in a way that will be of interest and relevance to a general pharmacy practice audience. In addition, students are encouraged to choose a topic that has NOT been done in the last 2-3 years. A list of previous seminars can be found here Previous Seminar Titles 1996-present

Seminar Development

Seminar topics MUST be pre-approved by the seminar coordinator James McCormack, AT LEAST ONE MONTH prior to the seminar.
Students are expected to seek necessary mentoring and guidance in preparation for each of their seminars. This may include their Faculty Advisor, the PHAR 535A Course Coordinator, and / or other individuals with clinical expertise in the seminar topic area.
Students are expected to provide a title for their seminar to James McCormack 2 weeks ahead of the seminar date. Students are expected to create effective, interesting titles for their seminars.
Presentation files - just bring your own device to connect to the screens. You can use PowerPoint, Keynote or Prezi.
Handouts - PDFs - one slide per page - must be uploaded to the designated "Pharm D seminar handouts" Dropbox folder no later than the Wednesday evening prior to seminar. If you have not received an invite to either of these folders please contact James McCormack

Student Assessment

An on-line evaluation system called e-Value is used to provide students with feedback. All faculty who attend and all students fill out an online evaluation. It is the responsibility of the student to review the feedback with Dr. James McCormack and, if so desired, with his/her Faculty Advisor.

Successful Completion

Should a seminar be deemed to be less than satisfactory by either the Faculty Advisor or the Course Coordinator, the student will be asked to present an additional seminar either at a later seminar date, or if no seminar time is available students will present in front of a contigent of Faculty.
