Basic Skills Project-Group Contribution

Group 11 will focus on Functions as our contribution to the Basic Skills Project. All of us seem to struggle with functions, whether it's composition of functions, graphing them, or reading graphs of functions. Our primary focus will be on trigonometric functions.

We plan to:

  • Have a mini glossary with what the notation means
  • Have worked out examples of composition of functions, which will get progressively harder. We will have helpful hints with the steps, tricks we used to work out the problem faster, as well as explanations as to why steps are necessary.
  • Using the online program Wolfram Alpha we will obtain graphs of functions. We will then show how, using two different graphs, we can find the answer to composition of function equations
  • We will have practice questions; answers to these questions will be worked out by Group 11 and then posted.
  • We will have some proofs/counter examples. To enhance this we will have links to other sites that offer explanations.
  • We will have links to reiterate our work
  • We will have a detailed explanation of helpful tools, such as the trigonometric circle, and a user friendly guide on how to use it.
  • We will use written step-by-step explanations, as well as mathematical solutions, in order to aid in the understanding of problem solving
  • We will make use of youtube math tutorial videos to provide a visual learning tool

Furthermore, we will focus on

  • Breaking apart more complex questions in regards to the basic skills required for its completion
  • Finding alternative examples in which basic mathematical skills can come into play
