Course:LLED 565B: Early Literacy in Digital Contexts

| This course critically examines dimensions and issues of literacy development for young children (preschool and primary grades) in a world increasingly saturated by digital media and technologies. Areas of investigation include the digitextual practices of children’s everyday lives; differential opportunities for engaging in digital literacy; digital literacy as social capital; the changing nature of childhood brought on by technological affordances of social participation; the burgeoning multimedia products and edutainment software targeted to young children; the blurring roles of novice/apprentice (children) and expert (parent/teacher) in digital literacy practices; issues of safety, morality, and ethics in consumerist-based digital worlds; and educational considerations for schools, libraries, and family literacy programs. There is no text; readings will be posted on Vista.
