Welcome to the Wiki Project Space for KIN 355 Movement Experiences for Young Children
Movement Experiences for Children (KIN 355) is an upper level course in the School of Kinesiology. KIN 355 examines current issues and research related to the movement experiences of children from infancy to early youth in a variety of movement settings such as the home environment, the child care setting, the school setting, as well as grassroots and high performance environments in the sport domain. The focus of course content is on increasing awareness of contemporary issues in society as it relates to children moving and identifying strategies to facilitate the motor development and human performance of all young people. Course work also includes the opportunity for students to engage in knowledge translation activities in the area of movement and children. This project represents the knowledge translation component of the course.
What is Knowledge Mobilization?
The mobilization of knowledge is critical to improving the movement experiences of children, especially as it relates to the grassroots levels of programming. Knowledge mobilization is a contemporary term. It refers generally to the transferring of evidence-based knowledge (i.e., knowledge generated from research) to its active use in a practical setting. Importantly, it involves the sharing and application of knowledge from the researcher to the end-user (such as a practitioner or the general public). The capability to identify movement-related disciplinary knowledge and research, then translate the information into effective tools and/or resources that can be readily accessible by the end-user is an important skill set to possess. Exploring and/or gaining experience with the mobilization of knowledge using various tools is critical for the translation of movement-related knowledge so that information can get to the wider population and children can experience movement settings that are age- and developmentally-appropriate.
What is this Project?
In KIN 355, students are provided the opportunity to find relevant information from the literature, summarize and identify key messages, and translate this knowledge into a product that can be used by the public. In this project, students will participate in the creation of UBC Wiki entires that will contribute to the creation of a Movement Experiences Concept Encyclopedia for the Early Childhood Years. All of the wiki entries will be compiled into an e-book at the end of the course, which all course participants will have contributed to, also providing evidence of all the hard work that went into the project. The content of the encyclopedia should be of interest to and used by anyone who works with young children such as physical activity program leaders, early childhood educators, or elementary school teachers, to name a few.
