Paid to become a baronet and raised a regiment for the Parliamentarians. This regiment performed well at the Battle of Newbury. Unfortunately, Colonel Winchester's brother Oliver accompanied him and died from wounds received in glorious action against the cavalier cavalry.

After the war became a justice of the peace for Staffordshire.
