Smucker's Sugar-Free Raspberry Spread and Pure Raspberry Jam

Smucker's is just one of the established and reputable brands in Canada that offers a variety of fruit spreads to meet various dietary requirements and tastes.

It is made up of fresh raspberries and sweetened glucose and sugar providing the Pure Raspberry Jam has a classic deep fruity flavor. Moreover, it is a good choice for consumers who want a healthier option, the jam is a part of Smucker's "Pure" line and has no artificial color or preservatives.

Where as for customers who would rather cut down on the amount of sugar they consume, the No Sugar Added Raspberry Spread can act as an alternative. Furthermore, this product employs sucralose as a sugar substitute and is sweetened with fruit juice concentrates rather than regular sugar while also contains fewer calories per serving, which then makes it a perfect option for customers whose sugar intake needs are lower for health or diet reasons.

Our team compares these two products to analyze the variations in ingredient composition, nutritional content, as well as the roles of different sweeteners and preservatives utilized in both spreads.

3. Role of substitutes and additives

There are no fat substitutes present in either jams. In the ‘Smucker's Pure’ as well as the ‘Smucker's No Sugar Added’, additive Pectin serves as a gelling agent and additive Mono and Diglycerides function as emulsifiers.

The functional properties that make the ‘Smucker's No Sugar Added’ jam differ from the ‘Smucker's Pure’, is the sugar substitutes and additional additives present. The sugar substitute is Sucralose which is a non-caloric sweetener. The additional additives include: Guar Gum (specifically used as a thickening and stabilizing agent), Sodium Citrate (gelling and pH adjusting agent), Calcium Chloride (firming agent), Potassium Sorbate (preservative), Red Allura (coloring agent), Brilliant Blue FCF (coloring agent).

4. Compare and Contrast

Smucker’s pure raspberry jam and its no-sugar-added version contain similar ingredients, such as raspberries, pectin (a gelling agent that gives the jam its thickness), citric acid (which adds a tart flavour due to its lower pH level), and mono- and diglycerides (emulsifiers that help blend water and oil).

The pure raspberry jam includes added sugars (glucose-fructose), which contribute to a higher calorie count and sugar content. This is the main difference from the no-sugar-added version.

In contrast, the no-sugar-added Smucker’s jam contains several additional ingredients. These include concentrated grape juice, a natural sweetener that replaces the added sugar, water, and guar gum (derived from the guar plant, which helps thicken and bind the jam). It also contains potassium sorbate, a chemical preservative that extends shelf life by inhibiting the growth of mould, yeast, and fungi. Other ingredients include sodium citrate and calcium chloride (which act as firming agents to maintain texture), sucralose (a non-caloric sweetener that does not raise blood glucose levels and is significantly sweeter than sucrose), and Allura Red and Brilliant Blue FCF (colouring agents that help preserve the jam’s visual appeal during processing).
