Simply Orange:

Simply 50:
- Simply 50 contains Stevia which is a sugar substitute, and Citric and Ascorbic Acid which are additives as well as ‘natural’ colours and flavours which are also additives.
3. Additives / Fat Substitutes / Sugar Substitutes
Simply Orange:
- N/A as there are no additives
Simply 50:
- The role of the sugar substitute, Stevia, is to provide a sweetness to the drink since Simply 50 waters down the orange juice to get a lower calorie count, they need to add a sugar substitute to preserve the original sweetness. Also Stevia has 0 Cal/g and is able to remain stable under acidic conditions which is necessary since orange juice contains citric acid and additional citric acid and ascorbic acid is added.
- The role of the Citric Acid is to help enhance the sour flavour of the juice as the orange juice has been watered down.
- The role of the Ascorbic Acid is to increase the amount of vitamin C in the drink as oranges contain a large amount of vitamin C and adding water into the drink would reduce the percentage of vitamin C in the drink.
4. Compare and contrast the lists of the two products and explain differences
Simply Orange is 100% pure orange juice, with no additives, preservatives, or sweeteners. Simply 50 is a blend of orange juice, filtered water, and orange pulp with various additives and preservatives, such as: citric acid, ascorbic acid, and stevia extract as a sweetener.
Simply Orange does not list any sweeteners in its ingredients, so it relies only on the natural sweetness of the oranges, whereas Simply 50 has stevia extract as a sweetener, which is made by extracting steviol glycosides from the leaves of the stevia plant, so it is a plant based sweetener. Both products contain orange juice, but Simply Orange is composed of 100% orange juice, whereas Simply 50 is composed of orange juice and additives, so its orange juice content is less than 100%.
Simply Orange contains no additives or preservatives, whereas Simply 50 includes several additives, such as citric acid (for acidity), natural flavor (to enhance taste), ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), stevia extract (a sweetener), and natural color (for visual appeal).
