Soil Based Urban Agriculture in Vancouver Proper

Goal: Find the potential food production from soil based urban agriculture in Vancouver Proper

End product: Numbers (possible numerical values based on the research) based on researched and surveyed information. Numbers might not be the truth

Modifiers of the Baseline: Land --> what is already being used vs. potential urban agriculture (i.e. baseline) --> soil based urban agriculture

  • private community gardens
  • residential backyards
  • municipal community gardens and public spaces

Crop feasibility

  • what conditions are needed for growth (e.g. space, temperature, water)
  • crop productivity
  • labour/maintenance/ease

Social

  • social enterprise/organizations working towards increasing urban agriculture, education (how to grow) and upkeep
  • inputs
  • public willingness/ability to give up land/grow crops via survey

determine the initial baseline to get the modified/final output buy investigating modifiers/factors

we need to determine what is going on now, understand the variables, and then modify the baseline accordingly

people in LFS and SCARP model Vancouver's land area in different ways (people have modelled amount co2 fluxes from grass (manicured lawns) in vancouver) University of fraser valley might have info on crops

working on land and social right now and crop feasibility over winter break
