Getting education in university is one of the most difficult moments and important phases in a student's life. Those who come from different parts of the world have to struggle more because they leave their families and loved ones in order to study abroad. That's why it's important for the university to help international students to get settled in a new community and place, so they can get education despite all these barriers. To begin with, most students are afraid of being rejected by society, so locals introduce the culture and customs. Visiting interesting stores and cafes will reduce tension in the atmosphere and help you relax. International students, on the other hand, can share the knowledge and experiences they have gained in their first year. University administrators know that many students find it difficult, so they host events with mental health and a solution to homesickness. Teachers can set up games to help them get to know other students and to help them to get along with each other while working on a common project, and have meetings outdoors, chatting over coffee or having lunch together.

Mike's Ideas for Supporting EFP Students[edit | wikitext]

This is where I'll copy and paste my text. Enter the rest of my description.

In fact, as you can see on the chart above, many new ideas could be brought into our lovely UBCO campus in order to make international first year students feel at home in a space of a few months. International students tend to be more attracted to being friends with international students that have travelled, had different experiences in their life and a new point of view that they could bring. On of the example that I am going to explain today is what second years or third years students in our university could do to welcome the new international students. Each new student can be linked to a previous student here, therefore this student will help the 1st year students with their integrations into the campus, show them the best places to visit and be in Kelowna or even help them with their subject if needed! This a really good way of helping international students as I, myself experiences this 1st year/ 2nd year help in my previous school. A great way to make new friendships.

The content on the chart is what I think are some suggestions for international students, especially those taking EAP courses, to reduce or eliminate culture shock and homesickness. Students coming to study in a foreign country must be nervous and uneasy. At this time, people around them can help them resolve this anxiety. Like university administrators, they can lead international students to visit the campus on the first day they arrive, making new students feel less scared and unfamiliar. Then set up an international student center to let students who have follow-up problems confide in their troubles. And local students can also help international students to familiarize themselves with this new city. As for professors, especially the professors of EAP courses, they can teach knowledge about local culture, so that international students can integrate into the local area and have a transitional period. The last is the international students themselves. First of all, they should take the initiative to overcome difficulties, and secondly, they should help each other and share information when they are abroad.

Local Students and Residents      University Administrators
  • Hold some welcome parties
  • Introduce and share local tourist attractions and delicious food with international students
  • Some free introduction to the school and surrounding facilities for international schools
  • Hold some exchange meetings (for example, let international students watch movies together, etc.)
  • Assign some important tasks to your day
  • Make an appointment with international students to talk about their current situation or difficulties and offer help
 Professors    International Students
  • Let the freshmen gradually adjust to the new college life (e.g. reduce the homework at the beginning, etc.)
  • Describe in detail the materials and study sites required for this class
  • There are extra Office hours to help some students who are still struggling
  • Older students give more help
  • Hold some interesting activities regularly to make international students feel warm
  • Club activities can also better communicate with freshmen and understand some difficulties they will meet at present
  • Gather people together on every important holiday

According to the chart above, there are some things that I think might be better for UBCO freshmen to get involved in their new college life. When an international student comes to a strange city to study alone, it is a very lonely thing. Therefore, these methods can make international students have a better adaptation process to adjust themselves. For example, when I took the EAP class, I felt strange when I just entered the class. But the professors' enthusiasm and careful guidance. Gradually, I fell in love with this interesting class. Also, some international students from the UBCO Student Union arrived in Kelowna earlier than us to study. When I first came here, many seniors would help me warmly. That's what makes me happy. What's more, the ways in the chart can help freshmen and seniors get together faster and make more new friends. -- Cherry EAP 104 -003
