Project Description

Context: What challenge or issue does the project aim to address?

The Initiative for Student Teaching and Research in Chinese Canadian Studies (INSTRCC) at UBC has been in partnership with the Burnaby Village Museum (BVM) since 2018. Every summer, BVM hosts UBC INSTRCC students on the 10-acre site to research and deliver interpretive experiences that communicate a research objective to museum visitors. Previous student projects at BVM have included historical tours, podcasts, surveys and exhibit audioscapes.  

To maximize the potential of past research and to increase the accessibility of the resources built by previous INSTRCC students hosted by BVM, students working with BVM as their community partner are tasked with putting together an online learning resource that consolidates key findings from previous projects/resources from past years including any further research materials on Chinese Canadians in Burnaby’s food system.

This resource could be used as: 

  1. An internal-facing resource as reference for future INSTRCC student cohorts working on projects with BVM and other internal functions
  2. AThe Initiative for Student Teaching and Research in Chinese Canadian Studies (INSTRCC) at UBC has been in partnership with the Burnaby Village Museum (BVM) since 2018. Every summer, public-facing version that can be shared as a resource on Chinese Canadian content in Burnaby.

Main Project Activities

  1. Researching past projects developed by INSTRCC students at BVM
  2. Researching methods to compile a multi-purpose online learning resource

Deliverable(s)

  • An online learning resource/toolkit that will benefit future INSTRCC students hosted at BVM

Will the work happen remotely or in person?

  • Remote work; BVM is not open to public in the fall term except for special events such as Heritage Christmas (Nov 27 – Jan 3)

Student Assets and Skills (preferred or required)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency reading, reviewing, and condensing academic and non-academic literature and information
  • Interest in community programming
  • Strong organizational skills

Are there any mandatory attendance dates (e.g. special event)?

  • Zoom meeting with museum curator – Jane Lemke on 22nd September

Is a criminal record search (CRS) required?

  • No

  • Flexible; partner is available to meet via Zoom by appointment

Related Community Service Opportunities for Students

  • Depending on individual / group performances throughout the project, students might be offered a paid internship position to work with UBC INSTRCC on community engagement programs, including possible internships with various local organizations including the BVM.

Expected Outcomes

Intended Project (Short-term) Outcome

  • As the joint partnership between UBC INSTRCC and BVM continues for the foreseeable future, these resources will benefit BVM greatly when future students are placed with BVM to work on  research initiatives.
  • Having a compiled learning resource may also increase the efficiency of future research work as these documents become more accessible for other organizations to utilize.
