Academic English Support Program

For students who speak English as an additional language.

Free, individual support to advance your academic English.

Do you speak English as a second or additional language? Could you use some help with all that reading and writing or with getting good notes from lectures? Do you want to participate more in seminars or speak more clearly? If you answer yes to these questions, but you don’t have a lot of time, and want free professional help, the Academic English Support (AES) program may be right for you.

Here’s how it works.

After you have signed up online and have completed the Proficiency Checklist, you will be invited to attend an orientation session with one of the AES program coaches to learn more about how the program works. Then you will book an appointment with a UBC English language teaching specialist—your language coach—and together you will discuss your draft Learning Plan which you will complete before the first appointment. Your coach will review your diagnostic information in the first module, and will work with you to refine your AES learning plan.

Your AES Learning Plan may include specific self-study websites, short, focused courses, and online modules. At subsequent meetings, you and your coach will review your progress as you work through your AES Learning Plan.
