Images Canada is a centralized database of digitized historical images from participating cultural institutions across Canada. The website is administered by Library and Archives Canada. The images are not hosted on the Images Canada website, instead Images Canada provides a centralized location to find and access the images. Images Canada pulls together collection from fifteen different partners.
License
All partner institutions participating in Images Canada have agreed to release images for non-commercial, educational use. "All images can be reproduced, in print and/or digital format, for the non-commercial purposes listed below. The images must not be altered or manipulated in any way and proper credit must accompany the images." (Copyright, Images Canada)
Approved uses include:
- Educational
- Personal
- Private study
- Reference
- Research
Images can be used in educational settings, including in printed handouts or online course systems such as Vista/ Blackboard. An open webpage would be questionable because that is not clearly “educational” purposes anymore.
Citation must include:
- Copyright symbol, ©, Name of partner institution ("Source" on image page), Image ID number, and the statement: "Reproduced with permission from the [partner's name] website (partner's website address)."

All necessary citation and contact information is provided on the image page accessible by clicking "more information" below the image thumb.
Searching, Downloading, & Embedding
Searching
- Basic and Advanced search accessible from any page.
- Advanced search is a simple boolean and fields search.
- Users can also browse the images by choosing one of the Image trails or Photo essays Images Canada has put together.
- Note: There is a bug in the Advanced search feature. Do not use the "All Fields" option when
- Note: The Images Canada servers can be very slow at times.
Downloading
- Click on image thumb to go to original image.
- Right click image, select "Save image as".
- Return to Images Canada search results page, click "More information" below image thumb to find all necessary citation information.
Embedding
No embedding options.

Notes / Caution
- Many of the images from University of Toronto Library have broken links to the original image. U of T seems to be having some problems with their Digital collections, hopefully this will be resolved soon. (April 20, 2012)
