Concerted cultivation

From UBC Wiki

Lareau coins the term "concerted cultivation" to describe the practice of actively fostering a child’s talents, opinions, and skills.

The focus is on the child’s individual development. Concerted cultivation involves enrolling children in organized activities, reasoning with them, and closely monitoring their experiences in institutions such as schools.

Who practices concerted cultivation? Middle-class parents according to Lareau. Working-class and poor parents practice another form of child rearing (see Accomplishment of natural growth wiki page).

What are the outcomes? Growing sense of entitlement among middle-class youth, but also over-scheduled children and frenetic families.
