COPE March 2010 Meeting

From UBC Wiki

Our discussion topic will focus on strategies that harness the power of technology to promote student engagement, helping students change from passive to active learners.

Agenda
Introductions
Technology is NOT just a tool - it provides an experience and learning opportunity to develop "proficiencies and skills essential for success at university and in future careers" (UBC Okanagan Strategic Action Plan 2010)

The Learning Environment

  • Student Centered - helps students make connections and to reflect
  • Knowledge Centered - contructivism
  • Assessment Centered - formative feedback, reflection and revision
  • Community Centered - links and connections with each other and also with experts

NOTES:

Instructors in this discussion are all using WebCT Vista, many are using Clickers, and some are using simulation technology, StudyMate, online quizzes, Blogs, Wikis, Discussions, and other multimedia and collaborative technologies.

This Wiki site will be updated with links to various Online Tutorials which may be helpful for students who are being asked to use a variety of technologies to create content and presentations both as individuals and in peer groups. This group of instructors like many others on our campus are surprised that so many of their students lack the knowledge and essential skills required to use technology and access digital information.

We will be supporting some new initiatives for elearning around podcasting and videocasting, iTunesU, multimedia and mashups for posting course content for student review of lectures and course objectives.

By having students prepare ahead of time, class time can be spent discussing, analysing and applying concepts which provides opportunities for increased understanding and deep learning.
