Summary

Description
English: Figure 1: Microplastic Distribution in the Arctic Ocean. 71 seawater samples from 3-8m depth throughout the Arctic containing microplastic were collected by four different groups during four different expeditions. The blue squares denote samples collected on the CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier from the North Pacific Ocean, Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea in 2016 (C30 2016). The black circles represent the samples collected by the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea expedition aboard the CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent, passing over the North Pole and into the Northern Canada Basin (UNCLOS 2016). The red triangles represent the Joint Ocean Ice Study aboard the CCGS Louis S. St Laurent with samples from the Canada Basin (JOIS 2016). Yellow triangles indicate the One Ocean Expeditions RV Akademik Ioffe, with samples collected from Greenland through the central Canadian Arctic Archipelago (One Ocean 2016). The pale blue diamonds represent samples from six stations in the Beaufort Sea down to 1015 m (JOIS depth sample). Arrows represent an approximate representation of the inflows of Atlantic- and Pacific-origin waters into the Arctic Ocean. The width of the arrows is proportional to the volume of the inflow.
