Summary
Description | English: Engraving of Pocahontas (1595–1617)Published by W. Richardson on Castle Street, Leicester Square, LondonAugust 10, 1793This engraving, made after Simon van de Passe's 1616 portrait engraved from life, shows Pocahontas in English dress. She appears stiff in Jacobean court attire, but the costume probably hid tattooing and provided the chaste image wanted by the Virginia Company, which sponsored her trip and probably commissioned the print. Portrait is surrounded by an oval border with the text "PRINC : POWHATANI IMP : VIRGINIAE MATOAKA ALS REBECCA FILIA POTENTISS". Rectangular decorative border surrounds oval portrait. Text printed below the portrait indentifies Pocahontas as the daughter of Prince Powhatan, wife of John Rolfe, and as a convert to Christianity. |
