-----TRANSCRIPT----- Victoria V.I. Apl 22. 1863 Royal Fisk Esqr Dear Sir Yours of the 17 inst received. Will you please find out what Soda ash can be sold for in your market I believe it is used chiefly by soap makers the duty on it &c. There is a lot of it coming from England. And there is no sale here I send you an advertsiment which I wish you to insert in the Alta Cal. have it put & kept in the auction page and kept in until about the 15th of May. Make them put it in as low as possible but have it well Set up. Time are still dull very little money coming down from th upp[er] Country Yours Truly JAMcCrea P.S. goods all right by the [moniter] I hav a consignment on the steamer [Seria] Nevada and notice they only charge 1/2 [indecipherable] J.A. Mc.C. Description: This letter to Royal Fisk was written by J.A. McCrea in Victoria, Vancouver Island on April 22, 1863. McCrea mentioned a pending shipment of soda ash from England and inquired about its duty and market price. He asked Fisk to place his advertisement in the auction page of the California Alta (Alta Cal.), wrote about his consignment on the Sierra Nevada, and indicated business is slow without much money arriving from the Upper Country.
