Summary
| Description | An American coot (Fulica americana) munches on the invasive, exotic aquatic plant, hydrilla, at J. Strom Thurmond Lake on the upper Savannah River. In some reservoirs in the Southeastern United States, hydrilla hosts a blue-green algae that can cause Avian Vacuolar Myelinopathy (AVM). This neurological disease primarly affects coots and bald eagles which prey on the coots, leading to death. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Thurmond Lake work to reduce the impacts of hydrilla to the reservoir and to the wildlife living there. (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers photo by Ken Boyd) |
