Talk:GRSJ224/Sexual Violence In Pornography

From UBC Wiki

Hi there, i found your article to be really raw and well written. The harmful ways sexual violence in pornography translates through to gender relations in everyday society is incredibly understated, depicting male sexuality as perpetually 'taming' or 'punishing' female sexuality. The degrading and derogatory nature of the imagery, symbolism, dialogue and blatant violence (young) men (in particular) see in pornography seems to naturalize or normalize violence against women which informs rape culture and sexual harassment. I found you touched on both points extremely well by providing examples of the specific ways sexual violence is expressed to draw attention to their inappropriateness. I would add that its important to educate young people in particular about the dangers of internalizing porn narratives as 'normal' sexual interactions and allowing them to base their notions of women and and healthy relationships as fulfilling what a 6 minute anal video communicates.

Hi,

While looking through our archive for the GRSJ wiki, your choice of topic is very interesting and really stands out. I think that confronting this topic was very bold of you. I find it very well addressed and cut to the point. The sub-topics you have picked are very well defined, and are easily understandable when reading it. My only suggestion to you is developing a stronger conclusion on what could be done. Like what Natalie had also suggested, I think that with a solid stance it could wrap up your argument about sexual violence in pornography very nicely.

Great work!

Hi there! This is a very interesting topic that you chose to write about. I think pornography is a topic that people refuse to openly discuss due to embarrassment, awkwardness, discomfort, and self-consciousness. Moreover, it is also quite a sensitive topic, so I appreciate that you wrote about it so objectively!

You provided great statistics about how pornography ranks highly as one of the most-searched topics on the internet. You initially introduced three effects of pornography (objectification of women’s bodies, aggression towards women, and sexual aggression) and created separate sections for the former two effects, but left out the latter effect (sexual aggression). I think it would be great if you could create a section titled “Effects of Pornography” and provide three bolded lists, with an overview or description for each of these three topics. This could perhaps organize your writing better and create a better structure for your page!

In your section “What can be done in the future,” you did not exactly provide any solutions or approaches to alleviate the negative effects of pornography that you discussed in your page. By doing so, it could conclude your writing well and allow readers to learn about the problems that arise with pornography, and potential ways to resolve these problems (So your writing comes full circle).

Also, I noticed that your references were not in APA format, so in-text citations such as (Relationship between online), (Spanking) and (Sex in bits and bytes) might be easily confused as text instead of citations. It would be great if you could utilize the citation tools on wiki, so that each in-text citation will direct us to the appropriate references. I hope this helps. Thank you for your work!

Hi there!

Really interesting topic for you to explore! Good introduction of the topic in the summary, really brought the reader into what you would be delving into and situating the context of it. Especially good about defining what pornography meant in this wiki! I really liked the mentioning of the androcentric nature of porn, and how it is mostly situated around male ejaculation and sexual climax for the male sex partner. I see that you mention "Relationship with online" and "Spanking" a lot throughout the wiki, not sure if that's just supposed to be references. If you want to make reference to a sources several times in the wiki, try following this.

I think the last line in the Objectification section could be elaborated on further. What kinds of objectification are there? Even if its just a one-liner, it's nice to give the reader a concrete image for them to visualize and associate your argument/point with. Digging deeper into the last two sections would also be nice.

Also, I think it would be a really good thing to delve into the feminist discourse surrounding porn (very much entitled the Sex Wars and the Porn Debate). This area of feminism has been written about heavily, and there's tons of literature to dive into for this! Basic run down is there's a debate between anti-sex and pro-sex feminists over whether porn is objectifying or liberating, and the inclusion of this into your wiki would be great. An inclusion of the pornographic actors' voices would be great too (we have to treat porn/sex work as not a stigmatized choice, but perhaps one that is chosen freely and willingly). To add even further intersectionality to this would be the inclusion of queer porn, since sexualized violence in porn is not simply experienced by heterosexual women (or men for that matter).

Overall, really good start and can't wait to see the final draft!

Hi,

Your wiki topic of sexual violence in pornography is very interesting and I enjoyed reading it. It is a serious issue that many people are often unwilling to discuss. Overall, I think you incorporated various meaningful information on your page. They allow the readers to have a solid understanding of the matter, but it might be helpful to expand on how the other factors you mentioned are contributing to the sexual violence. Perhaps you can elaborate on the effect of society’s gender relation and norms in maintaining the objectification of women’s body. There are also different perspectives regarding the role of male and female in pornography and they can influence people’s diverging approach to violence towards men and women in pornography.

Hi there, I really enjoyed that you chose this topic to write about as this is a very serious and ongoing problem within our society. The easy access to pornography is becoming easier and easier with time, and this is dangerous as younger and younger children could potentially be exposed to it. Not only this, but with young children being exposed to this, their reality of sexual activities could involve violence and inappropriate behaviour as this is what they are exposed to in pornography. I think the way you structured this and organized it and the way you state your arguments is very well done. The only one thing I see that needs to be fixed is your last title "what Can Be Done In The Future", just make sure the 'What' has a capital W! Other than this I think this post is very well done and I can't wait to see the final post!

Hi there,

I appreciate that you chose your topic to be on sexual violence in pornography; although this topic might be considered a taboo for some, controversial, and uncomfortable for others, I think that it is important to gain a greater understanding of it to examine how this detrimentally affects individuals (women in particular) in society. I liked that you mentioned that one of the impacts of sexually explicit media is that women’s bodies become objectified. Perhaps you could extend on this idea, what are the consequences of this objectification? In other words, how does objectification impact the lives of women? Maybe you can extend this objectification of women and the consequent impacts of this for women in the workplace. For example, if women are seen as only sexual objects in the eyes of men, the patriarchal culture is perpetuated and they are not seen as individuals, capable of doing hard work. Instead of recognizing their hard work and ability in the workplace, men could view them as sexual objects, thus preventing from moving up the professional ladder. In addition, you state that there are many other factors that can contribute to misogynistic beliefs and actions such as personal problems, existing personal beliefs, and family upbringings. In regards to existing personal beliefs, could these beliefs stem from the cultural context in which one lives? For example, living in a cultural society characterized by patriarchy can generate misogynistic viewpoints. I encourage you to look further into how sexual violence depicted in pornography contributes to and legitimizes negative attitudes, sexism, and misogyny.
