Artist: Raphael Rosendaal
Year: 2013
Medium: Mouse-motion triggered graphic simulation
Summary
Raphael Rosendaal creates a graphic simulation that is triggered by the motion of the mouse by the viewer/audience. The screen is bright blue, with birds singing and sun shining. As the audience moves the mouse from top to bottom slowly, it starts to shower, and as mouse drags lower, turns into rain and a severe rainstorm. The direction of the rain changes from left to right accordingly following the mouse cursor movement and screen gets darker as it starts to rain. The sound effect well describes the rainstorm.
Emotional Outcomes of The Work
Looking At Something consists of the bright, sunny weather with the bird sound effect, making the audience feel calm, happy and bright. But as the effect comes into play accordingly to the motion of the mouse cursor, audience will be experiencing screened weather that can be control by them. While having the control over the effect that audience can create, the sound effect of the rainstorm and the darkening screen and drops of rain creates a gloomy atmosphere, and triggers a controlled but also un-controlled emotion at the same time. Playing God and getting affected by the sound, audience will feel simplest mouse flick can change so much, although it is only played within the screen.

Exhibition Techniques of The Work
Different from other artworks, if you buy one of Rafael Rozendaal's art pieces, don't expect to keep it all for yourself. His works must remain readily available to anyone on the Internet. That's because the New York-based Dutch-Brazilian digital artist creates captivating websites, simple shapes in striking colors that move, bend, and twist continuously in ways that are never the same. Unlike a painting or sculpture, his works exist online for everyone to enjoy. But like their more tactical counterparts, they are worth a lot of money.
