  • Identify moments of your own transformative learning experiences

Watch

Watch this short video. As you watch, consider the following points:

  • Have you ever thought about how learning happens? How do you learn?
  • How might the way an instructor learns enhance/diminish student's learning?

Discuss

“Learning is a process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience.” – David Kolb

Ongoing experiential learning and reflection allows one to internalize knowledge and to transform one’s “frame of reference”, which is a structure of assumptions and expectations through which one filter experiences.

Take a moment to think about your own learning experience and respond to the following:

  1. Describe a moment that was an important step in you becoming a practitioner in your discipline (ie. an a-ha! moment that made you get into your discipline).
  2. What is one common misconception that people from outside your discipline have about your discipline?
  3. What transformation might you want to help your learners undergo so that they begin the shift towards becoming a practitioner in your discipline? (A transformation is an ongoing learning process that is necessary to become a practitioner/expert in a given discipline.)

Gentle Reminder: Your responses will be necessary for you to participate fully in the activity during the face-to-face session, as we will be building on your responses from the online component!
