The Pythagorean Theorem

The Pythagorean Theorem is one of the oldest and recognized mathematical relationship in history.
It has been a fundamental part mathematical research and classes all around the world. 

The theorem’s name is derived from its founder, Greek philosopher and mathematician, Pythagoras. The theorem describes the relationship between the three sides of a triangle.

The Pythagorean Theorem states that:

 "The area of the square built upon the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares upon the remaining sides." In any right triangle, the hypotenuse, (h), is the longest side. Basically, the relationship between the three sides is such that if you made a square on each of the three sides, they the largest ends up having the exact same area as the other individual sides put together. Therefore, the square of a (a²) plus the square of b (b²) is equal to the square of h (h²): a2 + b2 = h2


It is important to note that this is only applicable to a right triangle. Interestingly enough, it believed that one of its first was to help farmers lay out a ninety degree angle on the ground so they could build a proper fence between their land and their neighbor’s.

On a different note, numbers which can be sides of a right triangle (ones that follow the rule h2 = a2 + b2) are called 'Pythagorean Triples'. The most common ones are : 3,4,5 5,12,13 7,24,25.
