Engels and The Patriarchal Family

Hi Jaden, Your post and the Gilman article reminded me of our reading of Engel's Patriarchal Family from first semester. I think, oftentimes, that conceptualizing women in the familial relationship as business partners can be overly optimistic. If we are to consider this relationship from how Marx would see it, a women necessarily must perform her tasks for the family in order to survive. The exploitation of her labour, that is often not recognized or compensated for, can also be discussed through Hoschild's theory behind the 'second shift' in which women are working within an economic factory in producing children or caring for the family, but is not compensated for it.
