EDUC 5020: History and Philosophy of Education

Catalogue Description: “Ideas about what education is, what purposes it should serve, and how it should be structured are closely entwined with ideas of what a society is and how it functions. This course provides an introduction to key educational philosophers, and considers their impacts on the history of education and childhood.”

Week One

Day 1: (Monday, July 18) Introductions and presentations introducing the text and its themes

Day 2: (Tuesday, July 19) Discussing the Intro/Chapter 1: What is Upbringing?

  • 12:00 – 1:00 Presentation/Discussion: Ideas behind the Book (Updated July 21)
  • 1:15 – 2:00 Movie “Teachers in Transformation” (Dir: Alexander Kluge; 11 mins) and & discussion
  • 2:00 – 3:00 The history of the European concept of Formation (guest presenter Shannon Lowe with class discussion)


Day 3: (Wednesday, July 20) Chapter 2: Presentation – discussion, part 1

  • 12:00 – 12:45 Presentation/Discussion: Introduction to Presentation as a Pedagogical Fact: How do we experience everyday life around us? (Plessner) Presentation
  • 1:00 – 2:30 Story of the Weeping Camel (segments from and discussion of; 45 mins)

Day 4: (Thursday, July 21) Chapters 2 & 3: Presentation & Representation
